About This Role
Chemistry Teacher Trainee
Full Time (one year)
Start date August 2026
Apply by June 2026
We are looking for both career changers and recent graduates to train as Chemistry teachers.
Dulwich College in partnership with the University of Roehampton has created a teacher training programme designed to help address the acute shortage of Chemistry teachers.
Trainees on the programme are in school from day one and at the end of the year are awarded both qualified teacher status (QTS) and a postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE). Trainees gain hands-on experience in the classroom through two contrasting school placements in our partner schools. After completing induction, and during both placements, trainees generally are in their placement school for four days per week and spend the fifth at Roehampton University or a hub school for subject and professional studies training, designed and delivered by leading practitioners. The course is highly subject specialised, and trainees receive 14.5 days of subject specific training over the year.
Successful applicants may receive a £29,000 tax free bursary for the training year, subject to eligibility. There are also more generous scholarships of £31,000 available from the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC)
For trainees who left education some time ago, there are subject knowledge enhancement courses of various lengths available, for which trainees receive an additional bursary for completing.
Entry requirements for candidates are a first- or second-class bachelor’s degree (or equivalent of) in a relevant subject, in addition to a love of their subject and a desire to work with young people.
