Position / Job Specification: EAL Specialist
Key Responsibilities:
The EAL Specialist will directly report to the Head of Curriculum: Language Development and is expected to maintain a full teaching schedule. Our dedicated team of EAL specialists is experienced, motivated, and adaptable, with a profound understanding of the National Curriculum for England, actively contributing to its implementation. These specialists play a crucial role in advancing and promoting EAL strategies for all students. Collaboration occurs through close partnerships with mainstream teachers during both planning and implementation, as well as through leading professional development sessions for staff. English language acquisition is a core component of our school's mission, and we set high expectations for our students. Establishing a strong foundation in primary education and further enhancing our students' English proficiency throughout their educational journey is essential to achieving these objectives. EAL Specialists at Shrewsbury will be exceptional educators who understand the complexities of second language acquisition and how to effectively facilitate it in our unique environment.
Professional Expectations:
The ideal candidate:
● Will hold a relevant qualification (minimum of a bachelor's degree or its equivalent, along with an entry-level TESOL certification) and possess experience, preferably in an international school setting;
● Will be well-informed about current significant issues in Second Language Teacher Education;
● Will have knowledge of or experience in teaching EAL within mainstream curricula;
● Will have experience working with English Language Learners or a keen interest in enhancing their expertise in EAL teaching and learning methods;
● Will be motivated, enthusiastic, creative, and innovative;
● Will exhibit excellent interpersonal skills;
● Will be aware of and sensitive to the intricacies of working in a multicultural environment;
● Will be a committed educator capable of inspiring students;
● Will have a foundational understanding of the National Curriculum for England and strive for high standards;
● Will possess assessment for learning skills;
● Will adopt a flexible approach to integrating within the school’s curriculum and structures;
● Will recognize the significance of extracurricular activities in nurturing student potential;
● Will maintain a positive attitude towards professional development;
● Will diligently adhere to all school policies.
