Job Title: Head of Biology (HOD)
Reports to: Academic Centre
Supervises: Faculty Coordinators, Technicians & Teachers in the Department
Executive Summary:
Aligned with the school's mission, vision, and strategic goals, the Head of Biology acts as the leader and coordinator of curriculum development within the subject area, ensuring exceptional teaching quality.
Core Mission:
1. Establish the vision for the Department and guide its developmental path.
2. Conduct assessments while providing strong academic and instructional leadership.
3. Oversee curriculum quality and evaluate individual courses.
4. Understand the school’s overarching development objectives and make informed decisions accordingly.
Specific Responsibilities:
Leadership
1. Develop strategies for departmental improvement and monitor their implementation, setting targets as necessary.
2. Facilitate the recruitment and onboarding of exceptional teachers in the department.
3. Represent the department in discussions, contributing to the formulation and execution of relevant school policies.
4. Supervise Faculty Coordinators, providing guidance and training as needed.
5. Lead Health & Safety protocols in laboratories and during experimental procedures.
Teaching and Learning
1. Encourage the professional growth of teachers by partnering with PD Leads within the school and external providers to offer resources and platforms that enhance teacher development.
2. Implement the school’s performance management framework and conduct comprehensive reviews of teacher effectiveness.
3. Establish consistent standards of practice, promoting the sharing of effective methodologies within the department to improve teaching and learning.
Curriculum and Assessment
1. Spearhead the development of the subject curriculum and coordinate resource sharing within the discipline, establishing cohesive standards.
2. Supervise assessment processes for the subject, ensuring timely reporting of results that meet established standards.
3. Ensure that assessments are precise, moderated, and effectively prepare students for their examinations.
4. Provide students with thorough and timely developmental feedback to encourage progress.
5. Analyze examination results (including CIE and internal assessments) and integrate insights into the department's development plan.
6. Collaborate with Division (Year) Leaders to ensure departmental staff effectively identify and support underperforming students.
Other Duties
1. Develop a realistic departmental budget and execute it efficiently.
2. Oversee technicians to ensure compliance with relevant standards.
3. Collaborate with Division (Year) Leaders for the effective delivery of the subject at the division level.
4. Maintain attendance records for department staff, submit them to the registrar, and arrange cover staff for absences due to illness or other leave.
5. Undertake any other reasonable tasks as assigned by the school.
