About This Role
The role of the teaching assistant includes the following responsibilities:
· Review and assess learning objectives and targets.
· Redirect students’ focus back to their educational tasks.
· Ensure that necessary learning materials and equipment are accessible.
· Provide varying levels of support, from self-scaffolding to prompting, clueing, modeling, and correcting when necessary.
· Offer appropriate assistance at the right moments.
· Utilize open-ended questions and effective inquiry techniques; often respond to inquiries with further questions.
· Motivate students to embrace challenges in their learning.
· Demonstrate or role-play expected learning outcomes alongside the teacher, showcasing processes of exploration and experimentation.
· Confirm that students understand and can refer to success criteria. Ensure clarity on what they need to accomplish, what they will learn, and the expected outcomes by the end of the activity.
· Observe and document learning challenges and successes, providing feedback to the teacher.
· Remind students of group objectives and their respective roles while giving time management cues.
· Record any issues, errors, misunderstandings, and challenges for the teacher’s follow-up.
· Foster interaction among students.
· Encourage learners to reflect on their educational experiences. Prompt them to recall and utilize relevant strategies when necessary.
· Monitor and log students' responses, noting both challenges and achievements.
· Clarify subsequent steps in students’ learning journeys.
· Ensure students comprehend homework assignments (where applicable) and are aware of any necessary follow-up.
· Provide feedback to the teacher regarding any misconceptions, difficulties, or behavioral issues affecting learning.
· Actively participate in professional inquiry initiatives (such as PLCs, action research, workshops, study groups, critical friends, data teams) aimed at reflecting on practices and enhancing learning for all students.
· Engage in self-reflection by examining beliefs about professional responsibilities, striving to act with integrity and transparency, foster learning communities, and respect as well as promote various organizational, local, and global cultures.
