Overview:

Long Point First Nation is an English-speaking Anishinabeg community located in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region of Western Quebec, with convenient road access and just three hours from North Bay. Amo Ososwan School implements an Ontario curriculum for Junior Kindergarten through Grade 11, integrating daily Algonquin language lessons alongside cultural and land-based learning experiences. The role of Remedial Teachers is to offer tailored educational support to students with specific learning challenges (IEPs), with the goal of closing learning gaps, strengthening foundational skills, and reinforcing concepts through individualized one-on-one and small group instruction. As vital members of the Specialized Services team, Remedial Teachers collaborate with the Manager, classroom teachers, and external consultants to meet the educational goals of students, focusing on personalized instruction that caters to individual needs. This position presents an excellent opportunity for those interested in transitioning into special education or expanding their skills in the field. It invites all licensed educators, including recent graduates, retired teachers, those passionate about small group and one-on-one teaching, as well as current special education practitioners. While prior special education experience is not required, applicants should have a sincere interest in supporting students with diverse learning needs. Candidates without special education qualifications will need to complete the necessary courses to secure the Specialist in Special Education certification, including Part 1, Part 2, and the Specialist AQ, recognized by the Ontario College of Teachers, during their employment and must commit to this training. The school will fund tuition for each AQ course upon successful completion.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct assessments to identify learning needs, track progress, and adjust strategies with support from the Specialized Services team.
  • Participate in the creation, implementation, and management of Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) tailored to students’ specific needs in a collaborative environment.
  • Deliver personalized instructional methods and targeted remedial support to assist students with learning differences in enhancing foundational skills.
  • Identify and implement appropriate educational resources and assistive technologies to meet students’ learning needs.
  • Collaborate with fellow educators to facilitate differentiated instruction and support the inclusion of students requiring extra assistance in mainstream classrooms.
  • Develop strategies to aid students experiencing behavioral and emotional challenges, fostering a positive and effective learning environment.
  • Apply trauma-informed practices and address mental health needs by providing or connecting students to suitable resources.
  • Encourage student voice and self-advocacy, helping students set and achieve their personal learning goals.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of student progress, assessments, and interventions, updating them regularly to reflect current needs and achievements.
  • Communicate effectively with parents and guardians to provide updates on student progress and collaborate on strategies for support.
