Required Qualifications
Education & Certification
- Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree
- Valid teaching certificate recognized by, or eligible for certification in Nunavut (Internationally educated teachers without a Canadian teaching certificate must have their credentials assessed through Pathways To Teach Canada)
Desired Qualifications
Candidates need not possess all qualifications; relevant experience and a commitment to community-oriented education are highly regarded.
Language and Cultural Assets
- Proficient in Inuktitut (both verbal and written)
- Experience with Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit-based education
- Background in teaching within bilingual or ESL settings
- Experience in cross-cultural or northern Canadian teaching contexts
Teaching Practice & Classroom Environment
- Familiarity with differentiated instruction and inclusive practices
- Training or experience in evidence-based literacy development
- Experience using modern assessment methods to inform learning
- Proven ability in fostering a positive learning atmosphere through effective classroom management strategies (e.g., Restitution, Tribes, Positive Effective Behavior Supports)
Relationships & Student Engagement
- Experience cultivating respectful relationships with students, families, colleagues, and other stakeholders
- Background in promoting student wellbeing and engagement
- Experience interacting with students outside of the classroom, as appropriate
Collaboration & Professional Practice
- Experience in collaboratively planning instruction and student support
- Ability to work as part of a school team in a cooperative manner
- Engagement in shared, community-centered environments
Compensation and benefits
- Salary Range: $93,906 - $147,243 (commensurate with experience)
- Nunavut Northern Allowance for Kugaaruk, NU: $26,639
- Subsidized Housing: Available, though sharing may be necessary.
Conditions of Employment
- Current employees of the Government of Nunavut must possess a valid Nunavut teaching certificate.
- Candidates from outside Nunavut must submit a current public-school teaching certificate from a recognized Canadian jurisdiction. Applications lacking this documentation will not be considered.
