About This Role

Reports to: Subject Leader of History

Responsibilities: Instructing History for Years 7 to 13, acting as Form Tutor, and participating in extracurricular initiatives

The History Department

Our History Department consists of three passionate educators, each contributing their distinct expertise to enhance our curriculum. We aim to foster innovative and thought-provoking inquiries that educate and empower our students. We take pride in our dedication to a diverse and decolonised curriculum that accurately reflects historical narratives. Our KS3 curriculum is tailored to represent our unique Japanese and British context while promoting an internationally aware mindset. History is a popular choice at IGCSE, where we deliver the Edexcel IGCSE curriculum with an emphasis on significant topics such as Japan, Germany, Civil Rights in America, and the First World War. Furthermore, it is highly regarded within the IBDP, available at both HL and SL levels. The ideal candidate will exhibit a strong enthusiasm for history, education, and learning beyond conventional classroom settings. A successful applicant will be dedicated to continuous professional growth and possess a deep passion for history.

Key Areas of Responsibility

Teaching and Learning

• Collaborate with the Subject Leader to design and implement lessons and units across KS3, 4 & 5

• Model exemplary teaching practices, demonstrating effective planning, organization, and high expectations for student performance and behavior in all classes

• Apply evidence-based techniques to craft lessons that encourage student progress and engagement

• Assist students in reflecting on their learning experiences and recognizing their needs

• Provide regular feedback to students, both verbally and through accurate marking, motivating them to engage with that feedback

• Use relevant data to monitor progress, set targets, and guide lesson planning

• Assess individual student performance and modify strategies as needed

• Maintain a comprehensive understanding of the relevant subject matter and curriculum, igniting and maintaining students’ interest while clarifying misconceptions

• Uphold high standards of behavior and establish a framework for compliance with the school’s code of conduct

• Contribute to the school’s evaluation and improvement documentation as necessary

• Participate actively in regular meetings

• Take the initiative to improve teaching practices through suitable professional development, responding constructively to peer feedback

Other Roles

• Lead or support extracurricular and service activities

• Conduct assigned Wednesday afternoon Explore sessions, Duke of Edinburgh, or Life Skills programs

• Fulfill duties around the school as specified in the weekly Duty Rota

• Actively engage in residential curriculum trips as part of the BST Outdoors programme

• Serve as a Tutor within our House system

• Contribute positively to the wider life and ethos of the school

• Communicate effectively with parents regarding students’ progress and well-being

• Treat students with respect, fostering relationships built on mutual dignity

• Prioritize safeguarding students’ well-being in accordance with the school’s provisions

• Address any reasonable requests made by the Head of the Secondary School and Senior Leadership Team.
