Native Education College (NEC), since its inception in 1967, has established itself as a foundational institution, becoming the largest private Indigenous College in British Columbia. The college delivers culturally relevant education and training for Indigenous individuals, allowing them to chase their professional goals and academic aspirations while honoring their distinctive cultural identities and traditional wisdom. The NEC longhouse acts as a center for various resources and in-house support, including cultural and spiritual guidance, funding assistance, counseling, and career advice, all approached with cultural sensitivity.
Position Summary
The Student Advisor, Learner to Graduate, is tasked with offering academic support and guidance to students as they journey through their educational experiences at NEC. This position involves facilitating workshops, providing essential resources, and assisting with academic planning to help students achieve their post-secondary and career goals. Furthermore, the Advisor plays a crucial role in proctoring examinations and helping students navigate academic challenges.
Main Responsibilities:
- Serve as a welcoming and supportive contact for prospective and current students.
- Organize workshops that foster academic achievement and provide insights into educational pathways.
- Guide students in academic planning, course selection, and practicum placements.
- Proctor assessments and exams as needed.
- Conduct surveys six months post-graduation to gather feedback and analyze findings.
- Offer personalized support with career planning and preparation for further education.
- Assist students in overcoming obstacles and ensure they have access to vital resources.
Preferred Qualifications:
- A diploma or degree in a relevant area, along with at least three years of experience in student advising, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Familiarity with student or contact management data systems.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, sound judgment, and diplomatic abilities.
- Understanding of Indigenous issues within the realm of post-secondary education is an advantage.
- Experience working with Indigenous Peoples and a comprehensive understanding of the cultural contexts and challenges faced by Indigenous learners.
