Hours: Teacher contractual hours

Newhaven School is a complex organisation working with a range of young people. Please visit our website to learn more. There is potential for this role to be based in any of our different sites. Newhaven School are seeking to appoint an outstanding teacher who is committed to making a positive difference to the lives of vulnerable children, particularly those with SEND and associated mental health issues.

We are currently seeking an experienced Primary or SEND specialist teacher to join our team. This role involves planning and delivering ambitious, well-sequenced learning, adapting a mainstream KS2/KS3 curriculum for autistic students, to enable them to eventually go on to achieve academic success at KS4. Flexibility and the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues are key to success, and this role may well suit someone who is looking to further develop their pedagogy in a creative, non-mainstream environment.

Our focus on social communication and independence, alongside academic success, make Newhaven School an exceptionally supportive environment in which young people can overcome barriers to learning. Our highly-professional staff team are committed to enabling students to gain academic success, a keen sense of right and wrong, and to recognize their responsibilities as fully participating members of society. Our overarching aim is for all students to achieve fulfilling and ambitious destinations when they leave Newhaven School.

Newhaven was recently awarded “Trauma Informed School” status, in recognition of how we support children and teenagers who suffer with trauma or mental health problems. The good health and well-being of all members of the Newhaven community are central to our ethos.

The ideal candidate will

  • Hold Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of safeguarding responsibilities and a commitment to promoting the welfare of children.

  • Have strong subject knowledge and a secure understanding of the National Curriculum.

  • Be an outstanding classroom practitioner with the ability to inspire others and a commitment to high standards.

  • Have strong adaptive teaching skills and the ability to teach a wide range of curriculum areas.

  • Have a proven record of securing good academic outcomes for students of all abilities.

  • Have experience of managing challenging behaviour, including working with pupils with autism in a mainstream or specialist setting.

  • Have a practical understanding that behaviour is communication and be able to motivate students who may display extremely challenging behaviour.

  • Demonstrate innovation and the ability to inspire students with a range of needs.

  • Be able to contribute to wider curriculum development within a SEND context and work collaboratively to support a broad and balanced curriculum.

  • Have a passion and enthusiasm for making a positive difference in the lives of students with SEND, supporting both personal and academic growth.

  • Be able to analyse progress, plan interventions and support achievement for all learners.

  • Actively participate in and contribute to staff CPD.

  • Ideally, have experience of teaching across KS2, KS3 and/or KS4, and be able to offer a specialist subject.
