Role Overview

As an Assistant Mentor at Citizens School, you will be essential in fostering a dynamic and innovative learning environment that energizes and empowers students.

This role requires a progressive approach to curriculum development and instructional techniques, ensuring your methods address the diverse needs, abilities, and interests of each learner. The Primary Mentor will work closely with fellow educators, support staff, and parents to enhance student learning and well-being, while upholding the National Curriculum and the values of the school. By promoting high standards of communication, collaboration, and creativity, the Primary Mentor will play a significant role in igniting a passion for learning and facilitating the holistic development of every student.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Subject Knowledge

- Embrace an innovative perspective on curriculum and pedagogy, demonstrating a commitment to researching and applying best practices across all educational domains;
- Exhibit comprehensive knowledge of all subjects within the curriculum, with the capacity to adapt and innovate, understanding that each child's learning journey will be tailored to their distinct needs, abilities, and interests;
- Model and advocate for excellence in communication, collaboration, curiosity, and creativity;
- Possess a solid understanding of reading, writing, and mathematics development in an EYFS/Primary context, and how to enhance these skills throughout a thematic curriculum.

2. Curriculum Design and Adaptation

- Create, develop, and implement engaging and stimulating learning opportunities that promote knowledge, skills, and learning habits across all curriculum areas;
- Plan lessons that correspond with the EYFS/National Curriculum, integrating the six strands of the Citizens Tapestry to enrich learning experiences;
- Ensure that required subjects are incorporated into the broader learning context for students;
- Develop clear plans for students with varying abilities, providing necessary support or challenges to ensure lessons are customized for all learners;
- Strategically integrate digital technology into the learning process;
- Effectively utilize educational resources to enhance learning outcomes;
- Align planned objectives with formative assessment opportunities to ensure a thorough understanding of subsequent learning steps;
- Use internal tracking systems to oversee and report on student progress;
- Maintain regular and clear communication with parents regarding their children’s learning, mindset, well-being, and overall progress.

3. Learning and Teaching

- Establish and sustain a positive and inclusive learning environment that upholds high expectations and a focused atmosphere;
- Treat students with respect, fostering trusting relationships while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries;
- Inspire a love of learning and stimulate children's intellectual curiosity;
- Ensure all learning experiences are engaging and tailored to address students' pace, interests, and need for independence;
- Embrace the School’s commitment to inclusion and innovation;
- Encourage all children to act with integrity, respect, and compassion;
- Acknowledge the significance of smooth transitions between year groups and classes;
- Place children at the center of the learning process;

4. Collaboration and Community

- Regularly reflect on and critically assess your teaching practices and lesson effectiveness;
- Be open to coaching and feedback, valuing constructive discussions regarding personal development;
- Collaborate with team members to promote best practices, share ideas, and work cohesively for the benefit of the entire community;
- Partner with Mentors, therapists, and educational support staff to assist every student at the School;
- Share knowledge through Professional Learning and Development (PLD);
- Engage in Action Research and be willing to explore new strategies that could positively impact student well-being and subject development;
- Contribute positively to the broader life and ethos of the School, including participation in diverse co-curricular activities;
- Build strong partnerships with parents/carers and the wider community, helping them support their child's learning at home and effectively communicating about students’ mindset and well-being;

6. Other Responsibilities

- Assist in all aspects of preparing learning opportunities for children;
- Prepare necessary resources as required;
- Help maintain a safe and clean learning environment;
- Share communications with parents as needed;
- Observe children and document their work, verbal and written contributions, and observations to gather evidence of their learning.
