Kohl’s School, a leading First Nation educational institution, caters to over 70 students ranging from Junior Preschool to Grade 12. This year, Heart Lake First Nation has introduced middle school programming and is in need of a full-time teacher for grades 6-9 Language Arts and Senior High English. Our curriculum is Alberta Accredited and is enriched with First Nation language, culture, traditions, values, and morals. Position Summary:
Kohl’s School is on the lookout for a dedicated and knowledgeable English Language Arts Teacher (Grades 6–9) along with some High School coursework to become part of a collaborative and high-achieving teaching team for the 2026–2027 academic year. The ideal candidate will exhibit a deep understanding of the Alberta English Language Arts Programs of Study and assist students in honing their literacy skills, critical thinking abilities, and effective communication. The teacher will promote critical literacy, creative expression, and meaningful engagement with a diverse array of texts while working closely with colleagues to ensure alignment with the educational goals of Heart Lake First Nation.

Key Responsibilities:
Lead Powerful Learning
- Create both short- and long-term English Language Arts curriculum plans that align with Alberta Programs of Study and the Virtual Learning System.
- Develop and implement rich, inquiry-based, and concept-driven learning experiences that engage students with various literary, informational, and media texts.
- Explicitly teach strategies for reading comprehension, writing processes, oral communication skills, and critical literacy.
- Support students in cultivating voice, clarity, and accuracy in both written and oral expression.
- Incorporate diverse texts and perspectives to foster inclusion, empathy, and global awareness.
- Differentiate instruction to accommodate the diverse needs and learning profiles of students, including interventions and enrichment opportunities.
- Employ a variety of formative and summative assessment strategies to evaluate literacy skills, thinking, and communication.
- Analyze student work and assessment data to guide instructional decisions and promote student growth.

Build Strong Relationships & A Respectful Classroom Environment
- Cultivate a positive classroom culture rooted in respect, belonging, curiosity, and high expectations.
- Support students’ well-being, confidence, perseverance, and language development throughout their learning journey.
- Implement consistent classroom organization and management practices that encourage engagement, safety, and learning.
- Maintain clear, respectful, and professional communication with both students and their families.
- Foster strong partnerships with families to enhance student learning and success.

Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Education;
- Eligibility for or possession of an Alberta Teaching Certificate or Alberta Interim Teaching Certificate;
- Proficient mastery of English in both written and oral communication;
- Valid first-aid certification or willingness to obtain certification;

Preferred Assets:
- Experience teaching English Language Arts at the middle or secondary level;
- Familiarity with First Nation traditions and culture;
- Background in inquiry-based and concept-driven pedagogy;
- Proven use of instructional technology to enhance literacy learning;
