The Opportunity (Role Overview)

The Assistant Head of Sport is a crucial position that assists the Director of Sport (DoS) in nurturing a strong professional culture defined by collaborative teamwork and engaging professional discussions. This role involves providing professional leadership and management in designated areas as directed by the DoS, ensuring that program staff function effectively as a unified team, maintaining high program quality, optimizing resource use, upholding academic standards, and pursuing ongoing improvement. Creativity and innovation are essential to the team’s teaching and learning approach, with a range of competitive local and regional events scheduled throughout the academic year.

Responsibilities/Duties:

As a vital educational leader, the Assistant Head of Sport must demonstrate strong leadership and management capabilities, inspiring and challenging all staff and students to achieve excellence by:

Line Management Responsibilities:

The Assistant Head of Sport reports directly to the Director of Sport and will support specific areas of responsibility, which may include:


Leading designated program leaders and sports coaches


Advocating for excellence within the sports program


Fostering celebration, achievement, and progress


Engaging with the broader community

Main Tasks:


Build trust and confidence through personal practice and a proactive, solution-focused approach to enhancing session delivery and sports offerings


Communicate proactively, collaborating with the DoS to ensure timely and clear information regarding sports programs, events, and fixtures


Promote high-quality professional dialogue that encourages collaboration and supports individual and team professional development


Assist the DoS in guiding the professional learning trajectory for the team, identifying and utilizing school-based and external professional development opportunities, and integrating insights into training and support


Support both internal and external staff involved in the sports program by establishing clear expectations, providing appropriate safeguarding training, communication channels, resources, and constructive feedback


Actively monitor performance and address issues as they arise; collaborate with the DoS to clarify expectations, implement support strategies, and set clear improvement goals


Assist the DoS in overseeing the health and safety of physical learning environments and facilities, work with Maintenance and SLT when necessary, and conduct risk assessments for all events, fixtures, and tournaments


Demonstrate exemplary teaching practices and a commitment to professional growth, seeking opportunities for pedagogical innovation, collaboration, and sharing best practices within the team


Assist the DoS in ensuring the sports program is well-resourced to meet the needs of all students, including preparing, presenting, and negotiating the annual sports program budget


Collaborate with the DoS and the Primary Head of Sport to arrange entries for all SEASAC, FOBISIA, and AIMS competitions, ensuring team selections are based on fair and transparent criteria with each team assigned a dedicated coach


Help organize local fixtures and tournaments


Support the House Leader in coordinating inter-house sports events as directed by the DoS


Assist the DoS in keeping notice boards and SOCS updated for students regarding all sports fixtures (including current team rosters, results, awards, photographs, and other relevant information)


Help the DoS in monitoring and enhancing student engagement and performance within the sports program


Celebrate student achievements through the school’s recognition and achievement frameworks


Assist the DoS in effectively communicating pertinent information to parents regarding school sports fixtures and competitions, including selection letters, newsletters, match reports, future updates, presentations, phone calls, and problem-solving, while ensuring adherence to the parent code of conduct


Participate in and support school events and initiatives through active involvement and collaboration


Uphold the school's reputation and standing in the community at all times


Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, report any concerns, and take necessary steps to maintain a safe environment


Exhibit professionalism, cultural sensitivity, teamwork, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

Compensation

£30,000 - £45,000+ (Regional Equivalent)
