About This Role

We are looking for a committed and passionate English as an Additional Language (EAL) Teacher to become a part of our team. As an EAL Teacher, your role will be essential in a school where 96% of our students are local Emirati learners, and a significant number are learning English as a second language. The EAL position entails the following responsibilities:

Curriculum Accessibility: Employing WIDA standards to enhance the American Common Core curriculum, ensuring that intricate concepts in Science, Math, ELA, and Social Studies are reachable for all students without compromising academic standards.

Literacy & Reading Development: Implementing focused phonics and decoding techniques for younger students while fostering advanced inferential reading abilities for secondary learners. This includes choosing culturally significant, engaging texts that resonate with our local environment to enhance reading endurance.

Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP): Directly teaching academic vocabulary and sophisticated sentence structures to improve comprehension across various subjects, enabling students to progress from basic understanding to profound critical analysis.

Oracy & Verbal Fluency: Creating "talk-rich" learning environments that emphasize the development of oral language. This encompasses structured debates, Socratic seminars, and oral presentations to help students gain confidence in speaking English and enhance their listening skills.

Linguistic Advocacy: Utilizing "translanguaging" strategies that recognize students' home languages as pathways to achieving proficiency in English, while honoring the cultural identities within our community.

Data-Driven Support: Conducting MAP Growth and WIDA assessments to develop Individual Language Plans (ILPs) that monitor progress from BICS (Basic Interpersonal Communicative Skills) to CALP (Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency).

Collaborative Coaching: Acting as a "language architect" to implement the school's EAL strategy in partnership with homeroom and subject teachers, co-planning and demonstrating differentiated instruction that meets the needs of every student in the mainstream classroom.
