Teacher - Language Specialist

Grade: K-12

This is a full-time (1.0) position

School Overview:

Inuujaq School caters to around 330 students from kindergarten through grade 12. The Nunavut Department of Education is committed to supporting staff development through well-designed professional learning opportunities. Our schools are focused on improving literacy outcomes for every student while ensuring their educational experiences are culturally relevant and respectful.

Required Credentials:

  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Inuktitut
  • Eligible for a Nunavut Teaching Certificate as a Language Specialist

If a suitable candidate is not identified, this position may be offered on a one-year term under Letter of Teaching Authority Certification.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Relevant subject knowledge, training, and experience
  • Understanding of modern assessment strategies
  • Evidence of differentiated instruction and inclusive teaching practices
  • Experience and/or training in classroom management and fostering positive learning environments (e.g., Restitution, Tribes, Positive Effective Behavior Supports, etc.)
  • Background in cross-cultural and/or northern teaching
  • Training and/or experience in Balanced Literacy
  • Experience in an ESL instructional setting
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate positive relationships with students, colleagues, parents, and community stakeholders
  • Proficiency in education-related technology, such as SMART Boards
  • Strong organizational skills for lesson, theme, unit, year, and student support planning

Salary:

$78,206 to $94,389

Northern Allowance for Arctic Bay, Nunavut: $25,453

Current employees of the Government of Nunavut are required to have a valid Nunavut teaching certificate and must submit a current Criminal Record Check (CRC) and Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) before their appointment is finalized. External candidates not currently employed by the Government of Nunavut must also provide a current CRC and VSC before their appointment is confirmed.

Candidates selected for interviews should be prepared for questions following the behavioral descriptive model as detailed in the attached link Behavior Description Interviewing (gov.nu.ca). Please note that CRC and VSC forms are only valid for six months, so make sure they are current.
