About This Role

Reports to: Subject Leader of History

Responsibilities: Teaching History to Years 7 to 13, serving as Form Tutor, and engaging in extracurricular activities

The History Department

Our History Department is comprised of three dedicated educators, each bringing unique expertise to our curriculum. We strive to cultivate innovative and inspiring inquiries that both educate and empower our students. We take pride in our commitment to developing a diverse and decolonised curriculum that accurately represents history. Our KS3 curriculum is designed to reflect our distinctive Japanese and British context while fostering an internationally minded perspective. History is a highly sought-after subject at IGCSE, where we teach the Edexcel IGCSE curriculum with a focus on topics such as Japan, Germany, Civil Rights in America, and the First World War. Additionally, it enjoys strong popularity in the IBDP, offered at both HL and SL levels. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a passion for history, education, and learning beyond the classroom. A successful applicant will be committed to ongoing professional development and have a fervor for history.

Key Areas of Responsibility

Teaching and Learning

• Collaborate with the Subject Leader to plan and deliver lessons and units of work across KS3, 4 & 5

• Exemplify outstanding teaching practices, showcasing effective planning, organization, and high expectations for student achievement and behavior in all classes

• Employ evidence-based strategies to create lessons that promote student progress and challenge

• Support students in reflecting on their learning journey and identifying their needs

• Provide consistent feedback to students, both verbally and through precise marking, encouraging them to engage with that feedback

• Utilize relevant data to track progress, establish targets, and inform lesson planning

• Monitor individual student performance and adjust strategies as necessary

• Maintain a thorough understanding of the relevant subject and curriculum areas, sparking and sustaining students’ interest while addressing misconceptions

• Uphold high behavioral standards and create a framework for adherence to the school’s code of conduct

• Contribute to the school’s evaluation and improvement documentation as required

• Attend and engage in regular meetings

• Take initiative in enhancing teaching practices through appropriate professional development, responding positively to feedback from peers

Other Roles

• Lead or assist in extracurricular and service activities

• Conduct assigned Wednesday afternoon Explore sessions, Duke of Edinburgh, or Life Skills programs

• Fulfill duties around the school as outlined in the weekly Duty Rota

• Actively participate in residential curriculum trips as part of the BST Outdoors programme

• Serve as a Tutor within our House system

• Positively contribute to the broader life and ethos of the school

• Communicate effectively with parents regarding students’ progress and well-being

• Treat students with respect, fostering relationships based on mutual dignity

• Prioritize safeguarding students’ well-being in alignment with the school’s provisions

• Address any reasonable requests made by the Head of the Secondary School and Senior Leadership Team.
