Outdoor Education Teaching Assistant

About the Role

We are looking for a committed and enthusiastic Outdoor Education Teaching Assistant to support the delivery of a high-quality outdoor learning programme. Working closely with the Outdoor Education Lead, you will help create engaging, inclusive, and safe outdoor experiences that support students’ academic, social, emotional, and behavioural development.

Key Responsibilities

Programme Support & Delivery

• Assist in planning and delivering outdoor education sessions and enrichment activities

Support a variety of activities, including:

• Bushcraft, hiking, cycling
• Orienteering, climbing, team-building
• Help ensure sessions are inclusive and accessible to all students
• Prepare, organise, and maintain equipment and outdoor learning environments

Student Support & Behaviour

• Support students to engage positively in outdoor learning
• Build strong, supportive relationships, particularly with students with SEMH needs
• Assist with behaviour management in line with school policies
• Encourage teamwork, resilience, and independence
• Act as a positive role model at all times

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE)

• Support students participating in the DofE programme
• Assist with expedition preparation, training, and supervision
• Help monitor participation and encourage completion of award sections

Educational Visits & Risk Management

• Support off-site visits and trips
• Assist with preparation, organisation, and supervision
• Contribute to documentation where appropriate

Health, Safety & SafeguardingExperience working with children or young people

Ability to build positive relationships with students

Strong communication and teamwor

• Follow risk assessments and safety procedures during activities
• Support supervision to maintain safe staff-to-student ratios
• Ensure equipment is used safely and correctly
• Promote safeguarding and student welfare at all times

Teamwork & Communication

• Work collaboratively with the Outdoor Education Lead and wider staff team
• Communicate effectively to support individual student needs
• Contribute to a positive and supportive team environment

Person Specification

Essential

• Experience working with children or young people
• Ability to build positive relationships with students
• Strong communication and teamwork skills
• Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions
• Understanding of safeguarding responsibilities

Desirable

• Experience working with students with SEMH or additional needs
• Interest or experience in outdoor education
• Relevant qualifications (e.g. First Aid, outdoor activity training)
• Knowledge of behaviour management strategies
