Position Description:
The Algonquins of Barriere Lake are seeking a dedicated and skilled teacher for Grade 5, 6, and Junior High to join our educational team for the 2026-2027 academic year. This role involves working collaboratively and respectfully with our children, youth, families, and the community. Reporting directly to the Principal, you will be responsible for delivering instruction, providing supervision, and offering educational services to our students while also supporting extra-curricular activities when necessary.
You will align your teaching with the Quebec provincial (MEQ) and local curriculum, while also integrating the culture and traditions of ABL into your lessons. This includes adapting teaching materials and styles to cater to the diverse needs of your students. Responsibilities include preparing annual, monthly, and daily lesson plans, assessing and reporting on students' intellectual, social, and academic progress, and setting high academic and behavioral expectations for each student and class.
Punctuality and a strong commitment to student success are essential. You will participate in school supervisory and extra-curricular teams, including various committees. Regular consultations with the Principal and colleagues will be necessary to benefit all students. You'll also develop, display, and enforce a classroom code of conduct, actively involve family and community members in classroom activities, and communicate extraordinary situations involving students to the Principal and parents in writing.
Formal reporting to parents will occur a minimum of 10 times per year, supplemented by at least two informal communications. Any safety concerns or incidents in the school or playground must be reported immediately to the Principal or designated individual. Compliance with all ABL Board of Education policies and directives is required. You will create an annual professional growth plan focused on areas for development and engage in both formal and informal Professional Development and in-service training. Maintaining accurate records as required by ABL policies and the Principal is essential, as is active participation in all staff meetings and any additional duties assigned.
Education & Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in education or an undergraduate degree with a teaching certificate
- Member in good standing with the MEQ (or the ability to obtain)
- Knowledge of ABL and/or a willingness to learn and teach ABL
Skills & Experience:
- Experience working with First Nation culture and children
- Familiarity with the MEQ curriculum
- Strong commitment to school success
- Positive, proactive attitude with a willingness to go the extra mile for student success
- Effective planning, organization, and record-keeping skills
- Ability to lead, motivate, encourage, and empower students
- Proficient in computer use with advanced knowledge of educational applications and functions
- Demonstrated experience in curriculum development
