Required Qualifications
Education & Certification
- Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree
- A valid teaching certificate recognized by, or eligibility for certification in Nunavut (Teachers educated internationally who do not possess a Canadian teaching certificate must have their credentials assessed through Pathways To Teach Canada)
Desired Qualifications
While candidates are not required to meet all the qualifications, relevant experience and a commitment to community-centered education are highly regarded.
Language and Cultural Assets
- Proficiency in Inuktitut (both verbal and written)
- Experience with education based on Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit
- Background in teaching in bilingual or ESL settings
- Experience in cross-cultural or northern Canada educational contexts
Teaching Practice & Classroom Environment
- Familiarity with differentiated instruction and inclusive practices
- Training or experience in evidence-based literacy development strategies
- Knowledge or experience in current assessment methodologies to inform learning
- Proven ability to cultivate a positive learning environment using effective classroom management techniques (e.g., Restitution, Tribes, Positive Effective Behavior Supports)
Relationships & Student Engagement
- Experience in building respectful connections with students, families, colleagues, and other stakeholders
- Background in promoting student wellbeing and engagement
- Experience in interacting with students outside of the classroom when appropriate
Collaboration & Professional Practice
- Experience in collaborative planning for instruction and student support
- Proven ability to work effectively within a school team
- Experience learning from and contributing to a community-focused environment
Compensation and benefits
- Salary Range: $93,906 - $147,243 (commensurate with experience)
- Nunavut Northern Allowance for Igloolik, Nunavut: $22,579
- Subsidized Housing: NOT available
Conditions of Employment
- Current employees of the Government of Nunavut must possess a valid Nunavut teaching certificate.
- Candidates from outside Nunavut must provide a current public-school teaching certificate from a Canadian jurisdiction recognized by the Nunavut Department of Education. Applications lacking this documentation will not be considered.
