An exciting position has opened with The Ministry of Education, Provincial and Demonstration Schools Branch at one of our three (3) Schools for the Deaf:
- Sir James Whitney School for the Deaf (SJW) - Belleville
Our schools are dedicated to providing top-notch education for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students. We are in search of innovative educators who possess a valid membership with the Ontario College of Teachers and are interested in on-call or supply roles.
Compensation: Certified Supply Teachers will earn a daily rate of $262.09.
Please note: PDSB is enthusiastically inviting applications from teachers certified by the OCT who are interested in pursuing the Deaf Specialist certification. Candidates who are not fully fluent in ASL may receive assistance from an ASL/English Interpreter in the classroom while they work towards ASL proficiency.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must hold a Certified member in Good Standing with the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT); teacher candidates with a Transitional Certificate or awaiting OCT are encouraged to apply; Deaf Specialist/Teaching Students Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing (NOTE: PDSB will consider candidates who are in the process of completing the requirements for this specialist qualification and/or who show a commitment to pursue it);
- Qualifications for Primary/Junior and/or Intermediate/Senior divisions;
- Preferred experience in teaching Deaf or hard of hearing students in academic environments and in programs for individuals with multiple exceptionalities;
- Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) is preferred. (NOTE: PDSB will accept applications from candidates keen to achieve ASL fluency).
ABILITIES:
- Capability to instruct Deaf students in both academic subjects and programs for those with multiple exceptionalities;
- Skill in developing or adjusting lesson plans and/or creating IEPs as needed for effective teaching of Deaf students;
- Comprehensive knowledge of Deaf education principles;
- Proficiency in managing a classroom effectively, employing various behavioral management strategies;
- Ability to prepare and deliver educational materials and lesson plans, demonstrating strong interpersonal and communication skills, including proficiency in ASL and English;
- Extensive understanding of bilingual-biliteracy-bicultural education for Deaf students;
- Capacity to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team and engage with students with multiple exceptionalities.
