The Sports Department

King Edward’s School enjoys a level of sporting engagement and achievement that exceeds expectations for a traditionally academic boys' day school. The department's core sports – Rugby, Hockey, and Cricket – continue to flourish, complemented by a diverse array of alternative sports reflecting student interests, including athletics, fencing, racket sports, football, and water polo. The school consistently achieves regional and national accolades in various sports and has been recognized by School Sport Magazine as one of the top Sporting Schools in the country, as well as being frequently listed among the top Cricketing schools by The Cricketer magazine.

The department is staffed by dedicated full-time teaching and coaching professionals, including a traditional group of teacher-coaches whose contributions are invaluable to the school's sports programs.

Facilities

Located just outside Birmingham City Centre next to Birmingham University in Edgbaston, the school features exceptional sporting facilities. These include a new Sports Hall, fitness suite, and classroom, along with three rugby pitches and cricket squares on-site, an outstanding dedicated cricket square, and a premier rugby pitch with a pavilion and tennis courts. A floodlit astro turf with its own pavilion hosts first team Hockey fixtures, with additional astro turfs borrowed from the girls' school on the shared site. A world-class athletics facility is available in partnership with the University. We also have access to a 6-lane, 25-meter indoor swimming pool.
