Knowledge and Understanding:

  • Demonstrate thorough knowledge of English as detailed in the National Curriculum, A level, IGCSE, IBDP.
  • Show a solid grasp of the subject matter related to English.
  • Effectively respond to subject-related questions from students, being aware of common misconceptions and errors in their areas of expertise.
  • Familiarity with the curriculum and assessment standards for all secondary school levels.

Planning and Setting Expectations:

  • Define clear teaching objectives, content, lesson structures, and sequences tailored to the subject matter and the students being taught.
  • Establish high and challenging expectations for student learning and motivation. Set clear learning targets based on previous achievements and experiences.
  • Identify students with special educational needs and those who are gifted and talented, and know how to seek support for providing targeted assistance. If relevant, manage and document Individual Education Plans (IEPs).

Teaching and Managing Student Learning:

  • Provide effective instruction for whole classes, small groups, and individual learners to achieve teaching objectives, maintain engagement, and maximize instructional time.
  • Utilize teaching strategies that captivate students, encouraging intellectual curiosity through effective questioning, clear presentations, and suitable resource use.
  • Uphold high standards for student behavior, promoting a positive classroom atmosphere through focused teaching and constructive relationships.

Assessment and Evaluation:

  • Assess the extent to which learning objectives have been met and use this evaluation to guide future teaching methodologies.
  • Grade and supervise students’ classwork and homework, offering constructive feedback both orally and in writing, while establishing targets for student improvement.
  • When applicable, understand the expectations set for students regarding the National Curriculum, A level, IGCSE, IBDP, KS4, and KS5.

Relations with Parents and the Wider Community:

  • Prepare and deliver informative reports to parents.
  • Recognize that learning occurs beyond the classroom and create opportunities for students to connect their studies with real-world and work-related contexts.
  • Understand the significance of collaborating with external agencies.

Managing Own Performance and Development:

  • Recognize the importance of taking charge of personal professional development and remaining informed about trends.
