About This Role

Are you prepared to embark on your next professional adventure?

The Position

The British School of Ulaanbaatar seeks a passionate, committed, and highly capable Music Teacher for an initial two-year contract beginning in August 2026 and concluding in July 2028, with a chance for extension. While there is some flexibility in teaching Key Stage Three, the ideal candidate should be equipped to teach from Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) through to Key Stage Two (Year 6).

A comprehensive job description is attached for your reference.

Candidates we are looking for should have:

• A recognized UK teaching qualification, such as B.Ed, PGCE, PGDE, or an equivalent (a PGCE/PGDE should be supplemented with a relevant Bachelor’s Degree).

• Experience teaching in the UK or internationally.

• In-depth subject knowledge.

• A proven track record of delivering outstanding teaching and learning experiences.

Knowledge of the National Curriculum for England and Wales is essential, and experience in UK or international schools following a British-style curriculum is highly desirable. We are searching for professionals who are flexible, creative, and possess a sense of cultural awareness and adventure.

In addition to teaching duties, BSU boasts a dynamic extra-curricular program in which all staff are encouraged to participate. We particularly welcome candidates eager to engage with the Ulaanbaatar community and beyond.

The academic year is structured from mid-August to mid-June, as detailed in the attached 2026/27 academic calendar.

The Institution

Founded in 2012, the British School of Ulaanbaatar has established itself as a leading institution in Central Asia, focused on providing students aged three to eighteen with a top-tier education that promotes both academic excellence and personal growth through challenges. We take pride in our academic achievements and the wide range of educational opportunities available to students of all ages. The school follows the Cambridge International curriculum, preparing students for IGCSEs and A-Levels. Most of our graduates advance to prestigious international universities worldwide. We embrace both expatriate and Mongolian families, nurturing a close community ambiance.

BSU is a member of the Association of British Schools Overseas (AoBSO) and the Council of British International Schools (COBIS), having received Patron’s Accreditation in 2018 and full BSO accreditation in 2022. We are affiliated with the UNESCO Associated Schools Network and joined the Council of International Schools (CIS) in June 2023. The latest BSO inspection was conducted in March 2025.

The Location

Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, presents a blend of modern urban development and historic lamaseries alongside ger districts. The city features a vibrant social atmosphere where locals and expatriates interact seamlessly. Direct flights connect Ulaanbaatar to major global hubs such as Seoul, Tokyo, Frankfurt, and Istanbul, as well as more remote domestic destinations.

Surrounded by spectacular landscapes, Ulaanbaatar offers numerous opportunities for outdoor adventures and rich cultural experiences. Enthusiasts can partake in trekking, horseback riding, skiing, cycling, and camping while discovering the lakes, forests, mountains, and deserts of this extraordinary country.

While Mongolia experiences extreme weather conditions, the low humidity makes summer and winter temperatures more tolerable than one might anticipate. Frequent high-pressure systems contribute to clear blue skies, allowing residents to enjoy the stunning scenery. Significant improvements to air quality in Ulaanbaatar have been realized over the past six years, thanks to government initiatives promoting smokeless fuels.

Terms and Conditions

The contract will begin on 12th August 2026, coinciding with the induction and onboarding of new staff. We offer competitive salaries that reflect experience. Benefits include full tuition fee remission for dependent children, medical insurance, and allowances for flights and luggage at the start and conclusion of the contract. Furnished accommodation on or near the school campus is available, which is preferred by most expatriate staff. Further details regarding terms and conditions will be provided after successful interviews.

Application Process

To apply for this position, please submit the following:

• A completed Schrole online application form that includes detailed information about your qualifications, professional training, and previous employment, along with a cover letter expressing your interest and suitability for the role, emphasizing any relevant skills and attributes.

• Contact details for at least two referees, one of whom should be your current or most recent employer (Head of School/Principal or Chair of the Governing Body).

All required documents should be submitted to the School via the Schrole portal. The application deadline is Friday, 10th April 2026. Early applications are encouraged, as interviews will be conducted online as soon as possible, and the School reserves the right to appoint before the deadline. The recruitment process will be entirely online, and only candidates selected for interviews will be contacted.

The British School of Ulaanbaatar is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of children and young people, expecting all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The School’s Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy and Whistleblowing Policy are included in this advertisement, and we recommend all interested candidates review them prior to applying.

Candidates who successfully progress through the interview process should be prepared for thorough background and reference checks, as well as providing personal and medical information required for entry into Mongolia. Referees will be asked to confirm that applicants are not involved in any ongoing safeguarding or disciplinary investigations and are not aware of any issues that would hinder working with children. Applicants from the U.K. will undergo vetting and barring checks prior to arriving in Mongolia, with similar checks required for candidates from other nationalities. It is crucial for candidates to understand that any past criminal activity or convictions on their permanent record will disqualify them from employment with BSU and residency in Mongolia.
