About This Role

Piyesiw Awasis School, situated in Thunderchild First Nation close to Turtleford, Saskatchewan, serves students from Nursery to Grade 12, with an enrollment of over 270 learners. Recognized for its pioneering role in First Nations education, Thunderchild First Nation is committed to establishing a community-driven education system that incorporates Nêhiyaw teachings, perspectives, and understandings. The school operates on a 12-month academic calendar, allowing for the inclusion of ceremonial and land-based learning experiences during the summer, while also aligning instructional and holiday schedules with other educational institutions in Saskatchewan. The curriculum is founded on Thunderchild teachings, highlighting spiritual ties to Mother Earth (Askiy Pimatsiwin) and the Cree language. The summer months are dedicated to spiritual growth through ceremonies and profound connections to the land. At Piyesiw Awasis School, we aim to foster a safe and supportive environment where awāsisak (children) can develop Good Minds, Kind Hearts, and Strong Spirits.

Our Guiding Framework

PISIM is the fundamental aspect of our school culture, integrating Nêhiyaw values, principles, and teachings into daily learning experiences. It represents the Thunderchild Nêhiyaw identity, encourages language revitalization, and nurtures a spiritual bond with the land. The elements of PISIM include:

  • Pimatisowin – Embracing a positive approach to life
  • Ispihteyitamowin – Valuing oneself and others while recognizing inner strength
  • Sahkitowin – Caring for oneself, others, and all forms of life
  • Instotamowin – Valuing and engaging in all types of learning and teachings
  • Manacihtowin – Showing respect for oneself, others, and the entirety of Creation

To fulfill PISIM, wahkôtowin (relationships) is essential.
