About This Role

The Head of English provides both strategic and academic direction for the English Department throughout the school. This position guarantees exceptional standards of teaching and learning in English Language and Literature, spearheads curriculum development, tracks student achievements, and fosters professional growth within the team. The Head of English cultivates a culture of literacy, critical thinking, creativity, and academic excellence while ensuring compliance with school standards and, when relevant, international benchmarks such as the International Baccalaureate or American curriculum guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership
    Craft and communicate a comprehensive vision for English education across all grade levels. Spearhead the design, implementation, and evaluation of the English curriculum. Ensure both vertical and horizontal alignment of curriculum standards. Contribute to overarching school strategic planning and improvement efforts.
  • Curriculum & Instruction
    Supervise the planning, execution, and evaluation of English Language and Literature. Ensure the curriculum aligns with applicable standards (e.g., IB programmes, American/Common Core, or other adopted frameworks). Advocate for inquiry-based learning, critical analysis, and robust writing instruction. Facilitate the integration of digital literacy and research competencies.
  • Teaching & Learning Excellence
    Conduct lesson observations and provide constructive, actionable feedback. Mentor and coach educators to enhance their instructional strategies. Lead professional development initiatives within the department. Encourage differentiated instruction to accommodate diverse learning needs.
  • Assessment & Student Achievement
    Track student performance metrics and examination results. Oversee both internal and external assessments. Ensure uniform grading and feedback practices across the department. Implement intervention and enrichment strategies informed by data analysis.
  • Staff Management & Development
    Oversee the recruitment, onboarding, and evaluation of English teachers. Chair department meetings to promote collaboration. Foster professional development and continuous improvement. Manage departmental resources and budget effectively.
  • Literacy Across the Curriculum
    Champion school-wide literacy initiatives. Support interdisciplinary writing and communication efforts. Lead activities that promote reading and enrichment programs.
  • Student Engagement & Enrichment
    Coordinate literary events, debates, writing contests, and drama projects. Encourage involvement in external competitions and academic pursuits. Assist students in university preparation and advanced course selections (when applicable).
