About This Role

The Falkland Islands Department of Education is seeking a dedicated, inspiring, and talented Deputy Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Co-ordinator (Deputy SENCo) to join our team in August 2026. This is an exceptional opportunity to partner with the SENCO to lead, manage, and improve high-quality special educational needs services, while effectively utilizing resources to ensure outstanding teaching and learning experiences for students aged 3 to 16 in the Falkland Island Schools.

School Divisions

Our Primary division, known as the Infant Junior School and Camp Education (IJS&CE), caters to 300 students between the ages of 3 and 11, primarily based at our main campus in Stanley. Additionally, 20 students from our primary division attend small satellite schools or home-based educational settings in rural areas. Our Secondary division, the Falkland Islands Community School (FICS), serves 220 students aged 11 to 16.

Leadership Structure

Leadership is provided by an Executive Headteacher, along with a Principal for Primary and a Principal for Secondary. Both schools feature a strong staffing framework, including a SENCo, Deputy SENCo, senior and middle leaders, as well as a devoted team of teachers and support staff, which includes Special Educational Needs teachers and Learning Support Assistants.

Student Needs

Students with special educational needs present a range of challenges across four main categories: cognition and learning; communication and interaction; sensory and/or physical needs; and social, emotional, and mental health needs. Our SEND departments are well-equipped with ‘hub’ classrooms specifically designed for learners with complex special educational needs.

Role of Deputy SENCo

The Deputy SENCo will support the SENCo in managing all aspects of provision and intervention strategies in both mainstream and specialized teaching environments for students aged 3 to 16. Our schools aim to customize provisions to cater to students' learning needs, ensuring that every student is both supported and challenged to achieve their full potential. Ideal candidates will possess relevant experience and up-to-date knowledge in the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities field. The successful candidate will become part of a dedicated team, collaborating across all educational settings to enhance student outcomes and curriculum development throughout the 3-16 age range.

Ideal Candidate

We are searching for a Deputy SENCo who:

  • Can inspire and motivate teachers and learning support assistants to have a positive impact by promoting high-quality teaching and learning, ensuring that children with additional needs achieve their potential.
  • Demonstrates proven experience in teaching students with a range of additional needs across the ability spectrum and can assist in developing customized programs for life skills, functional numeracy, and literacy, while also helping students access mainstream subjects.
  • Holds a degree with qualified teacher status and has a minimum of 3 years of successful teaching experience.
  • Possesses relevant qualifications that enhance the role.
  • Is highly organized and focused on solutions.
  • Has a strong understanding of one key stage in the primary phase of the National Curriculum for England, as well as a good knowledge of the other stages within the 3-16 age range.
  • Exhibits a solid understanding of the SEN Code of Practice.
  • Stays informed about the latest SEND trends, policies, and provisions.
  • Can promote effective teamwork with colleagues, utilizing a coaching and mentoring approach.
  • Possesses excellent interpersonal communication skills.

Compensation

Competitive salary £45,744 for teachers with 5 years plus experience, plus 25% gratuity, plus relocation allowance, airfares, healthcare, plus eligibility for a TLR payment.
