About This Role

Sturgeon Lake School is seeking a Full-time Cultural Language Instructor to join the team for the remainder of the 2025-2026 academic year. The preferred candidate will be fluent in both English and Cree, demonstrating strong writing and speaking abilities. This role will follow the school’s curriculum while offering a level of autonomy in its implementation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work alongside the principal to develop long-term strategies, lesson plans, and assignments.
  • Provide instruction that supports the incorporation of Cree Culture throughout the school.
  • Create and implement impactful curriculum-based projects.
  • Incorporate language games, organized language exercises, and literature into lessons.
  • Modify instructional materials to cater to the varying ages and developmental stages of students.
  • Lead morning prayers in Cree.
  • Apply Land-Based Teaching methods for students.
  • Participate in both short- and long-range strategic planning initiatives.
  • Take part in special events and school festivities.
  • Attend relevant training sessions to further enhance your program-related knowledge and skills.
  • Gather and prepare materials and resources for Cree Language and Culture for teaching and presentations.
  • Attend parent/teacher meetings to discuss student progress.
  • Collaborate with elders and/or Knowledge Keepers as necessary, including for student discussions.
  • Teach students about powwow, traditional drumming and singing, hand games, and crafts.

This position requires a strong commitment; therefore, candidates who are currently working in similar roles elsewhere will not be considered. Applications are welcome from both SLCN band members and non-band members.

Qualifications:

  • Completion of post-secondary education
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficient in technology, including PowerSchool, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Internet research
  • Reliability and punctuality
  • Certification in Standard First Aid
  • Training in Non-violent Crisis Intervention is advantageous

Experience:

  • Essential fluency in both written and spoken English and Cree.
  • Knowledge of the Alberta Education system and language programming.
  • Strong presentation skills, with the ability to create and deliver instructional content.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication abilities.
  • Skill in building and maintaining rapport and trust with students.
  • Strong collaborative skills to work effectively with the principal in planning and executing instructional activities.

Compensation
