Maskwacis, Alberta, is comprised of four bands: Samson, Ermineskin, Louis Bull, and Montana. The Maskwacis Education Schools Commission (MESC) oversees ten schools dedicated to the educational needs of Maskwacis students while honoring the Nehiyaw language, culture, and traditions.

Situated in the picturesque region of Maskwacis, Maskwacis Cree Junior High School (Grades 7-9) emphasizes the incorporation of Cree language and land-based teachings within its curriculum. These concepts are foundational to the mission of all schools under MESC.

Position Overview

The Assistant Principal is essential in assisting the Principal with the daily management of the school. This role collaborates with both students and staff to cultivate a positive, professional learning environment that enhances student success. The Assistant Principal will lead initiatives in areas including curriculum development, scheduling, extracurricular programs, emergency protocols, and student behavior and discipline. Furthermore, this position serves as a role model, guiding staff and students toward an enriching educational journey. As a leader within the organization, the Assistant Principal will represent the principles outlined in the Maskwacis Declaration on Education and the core values of Îyinîw Mâmitonehicikan, Nehiyaw Pimâtisiwin, Nehiyawewin, and Wâhkôhtowin. This dedication is reflected through:

  • Making decisions that prioritize the well-being of Maskwacis students.
  • Supporting the Superintendent and the board to ensure every student can exercise their treaty right to quality education.
  • Advocating for and honoring the Cree language, spirituality, and traditions within the Education Authority.
  • Providing Maskwacis leadership (the Cree way) in all educational contexts within the schools, including consensus building, engaging stakeholders in dialogue, and fostering leadership throughout the system.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education.
  • Valid Alberta Teaching Certificate.
  • Minimum of 5 years of teaching experience (Grades 3-6 preferred).
  • At least 2 years in an administrative or leadership capacity.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and respect for Nehiyawewin (Cree language), culture, and traditions.

Preferred:

  • Master’s Degree in Education or Leadership.
  • Experience in Indigenous education or within Indigenous communities.
  • Knowledge of the Maskwacis Declaration on Education.

  • Exceptional communication, organizational, and team management skills.
  • Ability to engage effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Proficient decision-making, problem-solving, and time management capabilities.
