About This Role

About the Role:

The Head of Secondary position is a vital part of the School Leadership Team. This role integrates leadership duties along with some teaching responsibilities. The Head of Secondary is tasked with disseminating information throughout the school community, overseeing all internal and external assessments, and serving as the primary liaison between the school and external program organizations.

Administration:

• Oversee the daily operations of the secondary section of the school.

• Manage the allocation of teachers and their responsibilities in collaboration with the Executive Principal.

• Handle disciplinary issues involving students, both inside and outside of school, in conjunction with the Executive Principal, taking direct responsibility on a daily basis.

• Foster and strengthen communication between the school and parents.

• Oversee daily operations, including student attendance, staff attendance, registers, and coverage.

• Conduct regular meetings with the secondary section staff.

• Perform an annual 'Teaching and Learning' audit, ensuring horizontal and vertical alignment of curricula (IEYC/IPC/Cambridge Primary/Cambridge Lower Secondary/IGCSE).

• Lead professional development initiatives across the school.

• Direct school-wide processes for external authorisation, accreditation, and quality assurance (e.g., IPC accreditation, AIMS/CIS/NEASC Accreditation).

• Manage strategic communications with parents across the school (using platforms such as Toddle, newsletters, webinars, and parental education related to the curriculum).

Leadership and Management:

• Inspire, motivate, and lead all staff to reach the highest professional standards.

• Cultivate a collaborative learning culture within the school and engage with other institutions and organizations to create effective learning communities.

• Effectively manage change.

• Develop connections with the community.

• Work with the Executive Principal (UIS SJ Campus) to manage school finances effectively.

• Contribute to the formulation of comprehensive school strategic planning.

• Guide the establishment of school goals and targets that align with broader school objectives.

• Communicate these goals and targets to all relevant staff and students.

• Ensure that job descriptions and performance evaluations for all staff are based on clear roles and responsibilities, reviewed at least annually, and aligned with current employment conditions.

• Keep all policies current, collaborating closely with teaching staff and the Executive Principal (UIS SJ Campus).

• Maintain secure, supervised, and well-maintained school environments, ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations.

• Oversee personal professional development while promoting the well-being and work-life balance of all teachers.

• Ensure that all responsibilities assigned by the Principal/Executive Principal are fulfilled.

• Develop and, when appropriate, manage high-quality extended services.

• Carry out any other reasonable duties as required.

Academic:

• Create curriculum policy documents, an overarching curriculum plan, and schemes of work to cater to the individual and collective learning needs of students in collaboration with the Principal/Executive Principal.

• Lead the design and execution of a curriculum that inspires and engages every student.

• Ensure a consistent, school-wide focus on student assessment and achievement by utilizing appropriate data and benchmarks to set, monitor, track, and evaluate individual student progress.

• Leverage assessment results to inform overall curriculum planning, termly and weekly plans, and daily teaching practices to meet the identified needs of students.

• Maintain accurate and comprehensive student records and use data to support assessments of student progress.

• Oversee staff performance and curriculum delivery, implementing disciplinary measures when necessary, in collaboration with the Executive Principal/School Leadership.

• Monitor, assess, and review classroom practices and promote strategies for improvement, striving for outstanding standards of learning and teaching consistently.

• Meet with each staff member within the secondary section to evaluate their performance and development plans.

• Collaborate with the Principal to prepare and monitor a Personal Performance and Development Plan.

• Plan for staff professional development.

• Address and resolve underperformance among students and teachers.

• Uphold exemplary standards of behavior and attendance.

Communication:

• Foster effective relationships with all stakeholders through excellent communication and interpersonal skills, providing and receiving appropriate advice.

• Ensure that all communication channels within the school are respected and well-known by parents and staff.

• Coordinate with all sections of the school to ensure smooth transitions and continuity of learning.

• Represent the school at educational conferences and ensure that others responsible for curriculum development have similar opportunities.

• Prepare written reports as necessary for the Executive Principal, the Board, and any individuals or organizations designated by the School Leadership Team regarding activities, curriculum, and student learning.

Marketing:

• Contribute to the school's overall marketing strategy and participate in school marketing initiatives.

• Seize opportunities to promote the school’s values and mission.

• Ensure that others associated with the school also advocate for its values and mission.

Health, Safety and Student Welfare:

• Engage in creating and implementing a health and safety policy in line with national regulations and the school’s policies and best practices.

• Help establish and maintain a safe environment for all users—students, staff, and others.

• Promote staff awareness of health and safety issues through professional development and other activities.

• Raise student awareness of health and safety issues through the curriculum and other means.

• Assist in creating and maintaining structures, procedures, and a supportive environment for students academically, socially, emotionally, and physically, allowing for development in all areas. Perform any other duties assigned by the Executive Principal that are necessary for this role.

Requirements:

• BEd or equivalent qualification.

• Teaching qualification (PGCE or equivalent and/or higher degree such as an MA/MS/MBA).

• A minimum of 5 years of leadership experience in teaching.

Compensation

£30,000 - £45,000+ (Regional Equivalent)
