Role Overview

As an Assistant Mentor at Citizens School, you will be pivotal in cultivating a vibrant and innovative learning atmosphere that motivates and empowers students.

This position requires embracing a forward-thinking approach to curriculum design and teaching methods, ensuring that your strategies cater to the varying needs, abilities, and interests of each student. The Primary Mentor will collaborate closely with colleagues, support staff, and parents to enrich student learning and well-being, adhering to the National Curriculum and the school’s values. By fostering high standards of communication, collaboration, and creativity, the Primary Mentor will significantly contribute to instilling a passion for learning and supporting the comprehensive development of every student.

The individual in this role will be expected to embody the characteristics outlined in the Professional and Pastoral Expectations and will need to utilize their professional skills and judgment to fulfill the duties listed below collaboratively:

Key Responsibilities


1. Subject Knowledge

- Adopt an innovative stance toward curriculum and pedagogy, showing a commitment to researching and implementing best practices across all educational areas;
- Demonstrate a thorough understanding of all subjects within the curriculum, with the ability to adapt and innovate, recognizing that each child’s learning journey will be customized to their unique needs, abilities, and interests;
- Model and advocate for high standards of communication, collaboration, curiosity, and creativity;
- Show a solid grasp of the development of reading, writing, and mathematics in an EYFS/Primary context, and how to enhance these skills throughout a thematic curriculum.

2. Curriculum Design and Adaptation

- Design, develop, and implement exciting and engaging learning opportunities that foster knowledge, skills, and learning habits across all curriculum areas;
- Plan lessons that align with the EYFS/National Curriculum, incorporating the six strands of the Citizens Tapestry to broaden learning experiences;
- Ensure regulatory subjects in the area are included in the broader learning context for students;
- Develop clear plans for students at varying ability levels, providing support or challenges as needed to ensure lessons are tailored to all learners;
- Strategically incorporate digital technology into learning;
- Utilize learning resources effectively to enhance educational outcomes;
- Align planned objectives with formative assessment opportunities to ensure comprehensive understanding of next steps in learning;
- Use internal tracking systems to monitor and report student progress;
- Maintain regular, clear communication with parents regarding their children’s learning, mindset, well-being, and overall progress.

3. Learning and Teaching

- Create and sustain a positive and inclusive learning environment that upholds high expectations and a focused atmosphere;
- Treat students with respect, building trusting relationships while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries;
- Foster a love of learning and stimulate children's intellectual curiosity;
- Ensure all learning experiences are engaging and tailored to address students' pace, interests, and need for autonomy;
- Embrace the School’s commitment to inclusion and innovation;
- Encourage all children to act with integrity, respect, and compassion;
- Recognize the importance of seamless transitions between year groups and classes;
- Center children in the learning process;
- Listen to and act upon the ideas and suggestions of students, providing appropriate challenges.

4. Collaboration and Community

- Frequently reflect on and critically analyze your teaching practices and lesson effectiveness;
- Be receptive to coaching and feedback, valuing constructive dialogue about personal development;
- Collaborate with team members to foster best practices, share ideas, and work cohesively for the benefit of the entire community;
- Partner with Mentors, therapists, and educational support staff to assist every student in the School;
- Share knowledge through Professional Learning and Development (PLD);
- Participate in Action Research and be willing to explore new approaches that could positively influence student well-being and subject development;
- Contribute positively to the broader life and ethos of the School, including engaging in the diverse co-curricular offerings;
- Build strong partnerships with parents/carers and the wider community, assisting them in supporting their child's learning at home and communicating effectively about students’ mindset and well-being;

- Serve as an effective role model for students regarding professional practice.

6. Other Responsibilities

- Assist in all aspects of preparing learning opportunities for children;
- Prepare necessary resources as required;
- Help maintain a safe and clean learning environment;
- Share communications with parents as requested;
- Observe children and document their work, verbal and written contributions, and observations to gather evidence of their learning.

Compensation

£30,000 - £45,000+ (Regional Equivalent)
